The two-thirds placement, explained
The rug does not need to reach the headboard; nothing up there ever touches the floor. Sliding it under the mattress's lower two-thirds — perpendicular to the bed's length — spends every square foot where feet land: flanking the sides where you climb out, and across the foot where the room is walked. It also keeps the nightstands on bare floor, which spares them a permanent quarter-inch lean at the rug's edge.
Orientation is half the trick. Run the rug's long dimension across the bed, not parallel to it: an 8x10 laid crosswise under a queen throws roughly two feet of pile past each side rail, exactly where the 6:40 a.m. moment happens.
Why the strip must be 18–24 inches
The margin beside the bed has a functional spec: a landing zone the width of two feet placed side by side, roughly 18–24 inches.
