Nightstand Height: Match Your Mattress Top (Chart by Bed Type)
The nightstand is used exclusively by a person lying down in the dark. Its height is ergonomics, not styling — and the mattress, not the floor, is the reference plane.

A nightstand should stand level with the top of your mattress, or up to 2–3 inches (5–8 cm) above it — never meaningfully below. Measure from the floor to the top of the mattress (not the frame) and buy to that number: low platform beds pair with 18–22-inch tables, standard beds with 24–28-inch ones, and tall box-spring or hybrid setups need 28–32 inches. Most nightstands sold are 24–28 inches, which is why tall modern mattresses so often tower over them.
Nightstand height by bed setup
Bed setup
Typical mattress-top height
Nightstand to buy
Low platform + slim mattress
18–22 in
18–22 in table — standard nightstands will loom over this bed.
Platform + standard 10–12 in mattress
22–25 in
22–26 in — the modern default pairing.
Standard frame + 12–14 in mattress
24–27 in
24–28 in, which is what most stores stock.
Frame + box spring + thick mattress
28–32 in
28–32 in — small dressers and bar-height tables often fit better than 'nightstands'.
Nightstand width (any bed)
18–24 in for queen/king
Roomy enough for lamp + phone + water; wider starts crowding the bed's frame line.
Gap from bed to table
2–4 in
Close enough for a blind reach, far enough for bedding to tuck.
Why the mattress top is the reference plane
Everything a nightstand exists for — the glass of water, the phone, the lamp switch, the book set down mid-sentence — is reached by an arm extended sideways from a lying or half-propped position. That arm sweeps a plane level with the mattress top. A table at that plane, or an inch or two above it, meets the hand; a table four inches below it demands a downward grope that ends, sooner or later, with water on the floor.
Slightly above beats slightly below for a second reason: sightlines. From the pillow, a marginally taller nightstand keeps the lamp's shade — not its glaring bulb — at eye height, and from the doorway it reads as deliberately scaled to the bed rather than shrunken beside it.
Measure the bed you own, not the bed in general
Mattress-top heights now range across more than a foot, which is why a chart by 'bed type' has to defer to your tape measure. Modern hybrid and pillow-top mattresses run 12–16 inches thick; stack one on a frame with a box spring and the sleeping surface crests 30 inches — while the platform-bed movement has pulled other bedrooms down below 20. The same 26-inch nightstand is simultaneously too tall for one bedroom and too short for another.
So measure once, floor to mattress top, compressed as slept-on rather than showroom-plump. Buy within the window of that number to three inches above it. If an existing, loved table falls short, risers or a swapped set of longer legs close a two-inch gap invisibly; a table that is too tall has no such remedy.
Width, pairs, and the small-room escape hatch
Height serves the hand; width serves the bed's composition. For a queen or king, 18–24 inches of tabletop suits the frame's proportions and holds the working set — lamp, phone, water, book — without stacking. Beside a twin or in a compact room, 14–18 inches keeps the bedside from crowding the walkway, which should preserve its 24 inches (60 cm) of clearance.
Symmetry remains the cheapest luxury in the bedroom: two matched nightstands with two matched lamps read as design from the doorway. Where the second side has no floor to give, keep the symmetry at altitude — a wall-mounted shelf or floating drawer at the same mattress-matched height preserves the composition at near-zero footprint.
The common errors
01
Buying by the label, not the tape
'Nightstand' guarantees a height of 24–28 inches — calibrated to beds many people no longer own. The mattress top is the spec; the category name is not.
02
The sunken table beside a tall bed
A thick hybrid mattress over a box spring puts the sleeping surface at 30+ inches, where a standard nightstand sits a forearm's depth below the reach plane. Go 28–32 inches — even if the piece is technically a small dresser.
03
The looming table beside a platform bed
The reverse error: a 28-inch table beside a 19-inch platform bed towers a full head above the pillow and turns the lamp into a spotlight in your eyes.
04
One nightstand, aspirational dorm
A double bed with a single dressed side reads unfinished from the doorway. Match the sides — with a slim table or a wall shelf if floor space is the constraint.
The correctly sized picks
Tall nightstand, 28–30 inches
For box-spring and thick-hybrid beds whose mattress tops crest 28 inches.
Should a nightstand be higher or lower than the bed?
Level with the mattress top or up to 2–3 inches above it. Slightly above keeps the reach natural and the lamp's shade at eye level; meaningfully below forces a downward grope in the dark.
What is the standard nightstand height?
Most retail nightstands run 24–28 inches tall, which suits a standard frame with a 12–14-inch mattress. Platform beds need 18–22 inches; box-spring setups with thick mattresses need 28–32.
How do I measure for the right nightstand?
Measure from the floor to the top of the mattress as it sits slept-on. Buy a table within that number to three inches above it — the frame height and the bed's marketing category are irrelevant.
How wide should a nightstand be?
18–24 inches beside a queen or king; 14–18 inches beside a twin or in tight rooms. It should hold a lamp, phone, water, and book without stacking — and without pinching the 24-inch walkway beside the bed.
Do nightstands have to match?
The pair reads as design, so keep symmetry of height and visual weight even if the pieces differ. Matched height matters most — two different tables at the same mattress-matched height still compose; identical tables at different heights do not.
